England will look to respond after suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Greece, and revive their Nations League title bid against Finland on Sunday in Helsinki. Interim manager Lee Carsley may opt for a more traditional formation without Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane due to injury concerns.

Dean Henderson will start between the sticks, with Trent Alexander-Arnold, John Stones, Marc Guehi and Kyle Walker making up a defence line-up that includes Jack Grealish completing midfield alongside Declan Rice and Cole Palmer.

England XI vs. Finland

England interim manager Lee Carsley is expected to make changes to the side that defeated Ireland 2-0 on Saturday in Dublin. Former Irish players Jack Grealish and Declan Rice may retain their places after excelling against their former homeland during Saturday’s 2-0 victory. It is more likely, though, that Carsley will opt for more traditional looking formation. John Stones, Ezri Konsa, Rico Lewis will likely come into the back four at the expense of Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi and Levi Colwill – while Trent Alexander-Arnold will also switch positions after Thursday’s uninspiring loss against Greece in Helsinki.

Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane will make his 100th international appearance for England when he leads them against Finland on Thursday, and will receive a commemorative gold cap as a token of honor to mark this special momentous achievement.

Kane will be joined in his starting XI by Chelsea defender Cole Palmer, who may make his first start since September 2017. Manchester United midfielder Phil Foden and Tottenham Hotspur winger Danny Rose may also feature.

Carsley has yet to record his first win as England manager but should be favourites in Finland this month; their next stop will be Greece in an attempt to ensure survival of the Nations League.

England will be without Bukayo Saka, who suffered a hamstring injury against Greece. He will likely be replaced by either Noni Madueke or Cole Palmer on the right wing, likely moving his position accordingly.

The match will take place at Helsinki Olympic Stadium and start at 5pm on Sunday evening; ITV will provide live coverage. It will be an intense test for Finland as they look to regain momentum following Thursday’s humiliating loss against Greece – although they can start the day top of Group B2 just one point behind Greece who have already secured top three finish and promotion to League A.

England XI vs. Greece

Lee Carsley made an outstanding start to his campaign to succeed Gareth Southgate as Gareth Southgate’s permanent successor, with England winning their initial two Nations League matches against Ireland and Finland respectively. But Greece present a more formidable test at Helsinki Olympic Stadium on Sunday; they will look to make up for their shock defeat to Ireland at Dublin.

A win for the hosts would place them in second place, one point ahead of Norway and two behind Iceland in terms of points difference, giving them an opportunity to secure automatic promotion to the top tier – while defeat could leave them playing catch-up in March’s play-offs.

Carsley will aim to build on his team’s success against Dublin with another impressive win against Finland, likely opting for a more conventional 4-2-2-2 formation after their gamble with 4-3-3 in Dublin. Harry Kane should return after sitting out the defeat at Wembley and Carsley may opt to deploy him alongside Ollie Watkins and Jack Grealish/Anthony Gordon will likely keep their places while Tottenham’s Levi Colwill may regain his right side midfield spot alongside Manchester City teammate Phil Foden

Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas is back fit after missing Dublin with an ankle injury and could join Aston Villa defender Marc Guehi and Manchester United Kyle Walker as potential defensive partners in defence. Newcastle United Tino Livramento could also vie for a starting place.

Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey could make his first appearance of the campaign off the bench after an impressive showing against Republic of Ireland in midweek, while Chelsea’s Cole Palmer may come into consideration to replace Bukayo Saka who sustained an injury at Wembley and needed treatment during Wednesday’s loss.

England XI vs. Republic of Ireland

Lee Carsley may make several adjustments from the England side that won their midweek game against Greece, including dropping Nottingham Forest defender Morgan Gibbs-White, Aston Villa winger Ezri Konsa and Manchester United defender Kobbie Mainoo due to injury or suspension from training squad.

Carsley has already implemented one change by selecting Levi Colwill as John Stones’ central defensive partner, opting for versatility over Kyle Walker or Kieran Trippier who both start at left back at their clubs. Jack Grealish returns after missing out against Ireland; Declan Rice and Anthony Gordon will be given more chances in attack.

Jack Butland recently left due to a knee injury and Jordan Pickford will once more take his place between the posts for England. Pickford received criticism following his performance against Greece; hopefully he can improve on that performance when facing Finland.

Carsley has selected Lewis Hall for his full senior debut and to replace Rico Lewis in the starting line-up, providing additional defensive reinforcements. Newcastle youngster Lewis could also demonstrate his talent when used alongside more experienced Conor Gallagher and Jude Bellingham during an attack.

Heimir Hallgrimsson has yet to name his starting XI for Ireland against Belgium but may opt for five centre-backs as an attempt at strengthening a leaky defence. Ireland have scored only two goals so far in their four Nations League matches so this could be of particular concern for their coach.

Topi Keskinen will pose the main threat for Republic of Ireland this tournament, having been outstandingly effective with Norwich City this season and scoring four goals against Finland in their previous round 1-0 victory. Huuhkajat may look to add Teemu Pukki or Joel Pohjanpalo for England’s visit, who both boast impressive record scoring totals – Teemu Pukki has six goals scored from seven competitive matches while Pohjanpalo boasts eight in just seven!

England XI vs. Slovakia

England will travel to Helsinki next weekend to face their Group B2 rivals and interim manager Lee Carsley will hope his side can get off to an improved start to their campaign. After winning their opening games against Malta and Slovenia in November, England have yet to secure any wins in their last four matches since he took charge as interim manager.

Loss to Greece on Thursday has dropped England down into second place, so victory in Finland would be ideal in order to restore some of their momentum built during Carsley’s initial three months as manager. Unfortunately, though, key players such as winger Bukayo Saka and captain Harry Kane remain injured and could make this impossible.

Kieran Trippier will remain at left-back, while Luke Shaw could make a comeback after an extended absence due to injury. There have been calls for Southgate to drop Manchester United defender Shaw, but Southgate remains firm with his plans. Phil Foden starts after having left camp early for family visitations during midweek; and Kobbie Mainoo replaces Conor Gallagher in central midfield.

Slovakia and Romania played to a 1-1 draw last Wednesday and are expected to keep their same lineups for this contest. Ondrej Duda could miss this matchup for Slovakia while Francesco Calzona is without injury concerns.
