Jude Bellingham saved England’s hopes of an early exit at Euro 2024 thanks to a stunning individual performance at Euro 2024 qualifying tournament.
After the final whistle, Francesco Calzona and Declan Rice appear to get into an argument, with Calzona pushing Rice. However, Toney intervenes and attempts to defuse it by intervening to bring peace.
England vs. Slovakia
Gareth Southgate’s England side were on the brink of elimination from Euro 2024 last-16 before Jude Bellingham’s stoppage-time overhead kick helped rescue a draw against Slovakia. Now England are one win away from booking their place in quarter-finals against Switzerland.
Slovakia’s defence is stretched as Tripper runs down the left flank. He plays through to Foden but his shot is blocked before Slovakia get a free-kick that Martin Dubravka punches clear of.
As England struggle to equalise, Slovakia use effective ball possession and force an error from Guehi; who then brings down his man but does not receive his second yellow card due to this lapse in discipline.
Southgate introduces Declan Rice for Tripper as a creative spark, but the Brentford player could not make an immediate impression and was quickly taken off again. England won their set piece after Ivan Toney fouled them but their shot hit the woodwork; when referee blew final whistle England were through and were celebrated by their coaches and fans with Francesco Calzona exchanging words while hugging and hugging each other as Francesco Calzona hugged Francesco Rice on field as Gareth Southgate basked in atmosphere and relief that his side were through.
History
Once again, Gareth Southgate and England fans will hope for something other than what we have seen so far at Euro 2024 round 16 games in Gelsenkirchen.
Although England had control of territory and possession, they struggled to find an attacking edge until Adam Lallana’s volley in the 65th minute from Adam Lallana. Even then it was only temporary; England struggled against Slovakia despite missing Martin Skrtel, their key centre back due to a red card suspension.
Slovakia have found their confidence resurgent following their goal and an attacking ball into the box saw Kobbie Mainoo head just wide for a corner. England have seen several personnel change in defence – Eberechi Eze joined in, while Bukayo Saka came on to replace Kieran Trippier at left wing-back.
This match has been an anxious one and evidence of nerves amongst England players can be seen. Marc Guehi commits a foul on Kobbie Mainoo that earns him a yellow card – the Slovakia defender was known for being aggressive, however; and his tackle on Liverpool midfielder was worthy of being shown red immediately.
Preparation
Slovakia are confident and eager to win, yet are mindful that England have great respect for them, knowing they need to play well to beat them. While Slovakia have the ability to achieve this feat, they’ve yet to do it effectively in the final third.
Trippier was on the brink of disaster as he attempted to find Foden on the right, only for Manchester City player Foden to outrace him and intercept. Trippier took an awkward blow to his head that required treatment before going off, although it doesn’t appear serious.
Southgate makes a switch, swapping out Kobbie Mainoo for Leicester City star Eberechi Eze. Eze has been impressive since entering the game and will add some physicality to an England attack that has struggled for fluency.
At the start of the second half, England are playing well despite being down 1-0 at halftime. Phil Foden gets through but his shot is blocked before it can reach its target and clearance can occur for a corner kick.
England have taken back the lead thanks to a brilliant strike from Harry Kane who headed in from close range for a decisive strike and gave their hosts a much-needed advantage in Gelsenkirchen. Fans from Slovakia would likely have been nervous watching this goal but will now feel relieved as England took back control.
Matchday 1
Teams prepare for their match at Friends Arena by playing their national anthems and the referee blowing his whistle to signal the start of play.
England are unquestionable favorites to win this matchup and their 2-0 victory against Ukraine in September gave them a solid platform upon which to build this contest. They currently lead their group with 10 points and an excellent goal differential while Slovakia lie in third with three behind Estonia and Azerbaijan; thus a victory for England could guarantee promotion into the next zone of UEFA Nations League competition.
Slovakia are winnable against England (D1 L2) after only winning one of their previous four competitive matches against them (D1 L2); but here they could avenge that record. Albert Rusnak scored twice against Ukraine while Kucka and Adam Zrelak each netted one goal to help lead Slovakia to an unexpected 1-0 win and according to Opta’s supercomputer they have an excellent chance of progressing to round two with victory.
Manchester United duo Zrelak and Lobotka will both return to Slovakia’s national team, having impressed on club level for respective clubs. Both players should look to do just as well in this match against an opposition that has only managed two goals during its initial rounds of UEFA Nations League competition. Slovakia are hoping that Zrelak and Lobotka can provide the spark needed to end its goal drought against such opposition.
Matchday 2
An uneventful start to the second period with neither side creating much and Pickford making another impressive save. A free kick from Skriniar was floated over the top but fell wide. England tried attacking Slovakia on the break through Foden and Bellingham, who nearly got behind but the Slovakia defence held firm.
Palmer takes a scuffed shot before setting up Eze, who misses. Another promising chance comes through from a corner kick but no-one can connect with it.
As time ticks away, England seeks fresh legs. Trent Alexander-Arnold arrives and immediately causes problems to Slovakia’s defence with his pace.
England makes an amazing, late, dramatic turnaround! Bellingham only came on in the last 10 minutes but gave England hope of progressing to the quarter-finals with his incredible overhead kick. What an unbelievable moment for Gareth Southgate and his players; now Slovakia must try and stop them.
Final
Gareth Southgate’s England side have struggled in Euro 2024 thus far, their disjointed performances undermining expectations across the nation. But in their final match at Gelsenkirchen they can secure a quarter-final spot by beating Slovakia.
Ivan Schranz’s opener for Slovakia seemed to signal England’s demise as they looked set to fall short in this tournament, yet Jude Bellingham’s late overhead kick saved their hopes. Such moments serve to unify and unite their squad as they attempt to improve upon a chaotic start to this tournament.
As time runs down, England attack with increasing urgency. Eberechi Eze forces a corner, but Martin Dubravka manages to parry away and clear it safely.
Mainoo earns a free-kick but his effort flies straight against the wall. After this late change, Tripper was replaced by Palmer, who may move across onto his preferred left flank.
Declan Rice gets involved in an altercation with one of Slovakia’s coaching staff members and referee Umut Meler appears to issue a yellow card before backing off and it seems more like an act of miscommunication than anything.
